EQUSaT Joins Global Research on Colorectal Cancer
April 13, 2025
Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSaT), in partnership with the University of Leeds and international collaborators from Ghana, Argentina, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Romania, is actively participating in pioneering research on the role of the microbiome in colorectal cancer.
The collaboration is led by Professor Phil Quirke from the University of Leeds, with Uganda represented by Dr. Richard Wismayer, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at EQUSaT.
The research focuses on understanding how gut bacteria contribute to the development, progression, and treatment of colorectal cancer. A key component of the study is exploring the influence of the microbiome on the risk, diagnosis, and management of the disease.
This groundbreaking work is part of the OPTIMISTICC CRUK Grand Challenge, which investigates the causation, screening, and biology of bowel cancer. The research team convened at the University of Leeds on the 7th and 8th of April 2025 to share updates and present findings from each participating country.
