Spotlight: Dr. Maysa Ragab Toto – A Lecturer Shaping the Future of Microbiology

In every institution, there are educators whose impact extends far beyond lecture halls and laboratory sessions. They are the mentors who inspire confidence, cultivate curiosity, and remind students that success is achievable through guidance and perseverance. At Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSaT), Dr. Maysa Ragab Toto, Head of the Department of Microbiology, is one such academic.

Recently, Year Two students organized a surprise cake-cutting celebration in her honour, a heartfelt gesture of appreciation for a lecturer whose dedication has left an indelible mark on their academic journey. The celebration reflected not only gratitude for her expertise but also admiration for the compassion and humility she brings to her profession.

Dr. Toto's academic journey is a testament to her commitment to lifelong learning and scientific excellence. She earned a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVet) from the University of Khartoum in 2003, followed by a Master of Science in Microbiology from the same institution in 2013. She later completed a PhD in Epidemiology and Molecular Biology at the University of Bahri, further strengthening her expertise in infectious diseases, public health, and biomedical research.

Yet, it is not only her qualifications that have earned her the respect of students and colleagues. Those who study under her describe a lecturer who pays close attention to every learner, especially those facing academic challenges. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student has the potential to succeed when provided with the right support, encouragement, and mentorship.

Students often speak of her willingness to go beyond scheduled lectures to explain difficult concepts, provide academic guidance, and motivate them to strive for excellence. Her approachable nature and genuine concern for student progress have fostered an environment where learning is both engaging and empowering.

One student captured this sentiment by describing Dr. Toto as "a lecturer who sees you struggling to pass and is genuinely eager to find the best way to help you succeed. She has a very strong sense of professional humility." Such words reflect the high regard in which she is held by those whose lives she influences every day.

As Head of the Department of Microbiology, Dr. Toto continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. Through her expertise, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence, she exemplifies the values that define quality higher education.

The surprise celebration served as a fitting tribute to an educator whose greatest achievement lies not only in her academic accomplishments but also in the countless students she inspires to believe in themselves and pursue excellence with confidence.
